Busy, Marg and ERP: different starting points
Busy and Marg are well-known Indian software packages focused on accounting, billing, inventory and GST compliance. Both are traditionally desktop-first and are widely used by traders, distributors, retailers and small manufacturers, with large dealer and support networks.
An ERP is designed for running operations end to end across departments. Looking for an alternative is usually a sign of growth rather than dissatisfaction: the business now needs workflows the original software was not primarily designed for.
Where Busy and Marg work well
- Fast GST billing and invoicing for trading businesses.
- Accounting, ledgers and statutory reports for small teams.
- Inventory with batches and godowns for distribution.
- Familiar interfaces with local dealer support across India.
- A modest investment that suits small businesses.
If these cover your needs, there is little reason to change.
When an industry-specific ERP like DotOne fits better
- Multi-stage manufacturing with semi-finished goods, scrap and job work.
- Production planning against orders, machines and lead times.
- Several plants, branches or warehouses needing real-time visibility.
- Structured sales: enquiries, quotations, approvals and CRM follow-ups.
- Quality inspections and batch traceability.
- Field teams and supervisors who need mobile access.
Side-by-side: what changes with an ERP
Design centre
Accounting packages centre on the voucher and invoice. An ERP centres on business documents such as orders, work orders and dispatches, which then create accounting entries.
Users
Accounting packages are mainly used by accounts and billing staff. An ERP is used across sales, stores, production, quality and management.
Access
Desktop-first software usually relies on local or remote access setups. Cloud ERPs work in the browser and on mobile.
Production
Accounting packages cover basic manufacturing. ERPs add process stages, capacity and quality.
Questions to ask before switching
- Is our bottleneck billing and accounts, or production, stock and dispatch?
- How many people outside accounts need the system?
- Will accounting move into the ERP, or stay in our current software?
- Can the vendor demonstrate our own process end to end?
- How will masters, opening stock and outstanding balances be migrated?
Our ERP buyer's guide has a fuller checklist.
Migration path from Busy or Marg
Masters such as items, customers, suppliers and ledgers can usually be exported to spreadsheets and imported into the ERP after cleaning. Opening stock and outstanding balances are loaded at a cut-off date, and historical data stays in the old software for reference.
We recommend switching at a month or quarter end with a short parallel run. Our implementation services page explains how we plan this.
Where DotOne fits
DotOne is built for Indian MSMEs and manufacturers whose operations have outgrown accounting and billing software. It covers sales, purchase, inventory, manufacturing, quality, HR and finance, with industry templates and AI agents.
If Busy or Marg meets your needs today, keep it. When operations become the bottleneck, DotOne is worth evaluating. See also our MSME ERP page.
