SAP and the alternatives
SAP is one of the world’s largest ERP vendors. Its enterprise ERP, SAP ECC, has run the operations of large manufacturers for decades, and its successor SAP S/4HANA is offered on-premise or in the cloud, including through the RISE with SAP programme. Both are implemented through SAP partners and system integrators.
SAP has announced the end of mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC 6.0 at the end of 2027, with optional extended maintenance after that. Many companies on ECC therefore face a decision: move to S/4HANA, or re-evaluate which ERP fits their size and industry today. For small and mid-sized businesses SAP also offers SAP Business One, which we compare on our SAP Business One alternative page.
Where SAP is a good fit
- Large, multi-country operations: many legal entities, currencies and plants that need one global template.
- Group requirements: a parent company or major customers that require SAP or exchange data with SAP.
- Deep, standardised processes: you want SAP best practices and are ready to adapt processes to them.
- In-house SAP team: you have, or can fund, an internal SAP team plus a long-term implementation partner.
- Ecosystem: you need the wider SAP portfolio for analytics, procurement, HR or supply chain.
In these situations SAP is often the right answer, and moving to S/4HANA is a natural path.
When an industry-specific ERP like DotOne fits better
- You are an Indian mid-size or growing manufacturer and SAP’s scale is more than your operations need.
- Your production follows sector-specific stages, units and quality checks you want pre-configured, not built as custom developments.
- You want the product vendor itself to implement and support the system, without a separate partner layer.
- You need job work, process-wise scrap, batch traceability and GST workflows set up for Indian operations.
- Shop floor, stores and sales teams need a simple mobile app rather than desktop transactions.
- You want AI agents that flag shortages, delays and overdue payments without a separate project.

How they differ in practice
Scale and scope
SAP covers almost every enterprise process across countries and industries. DotOne focuses on what Indian manufacturers, distributors and service businesses run every day.
Delivery model
SAP is delivered through partners and integrators, so results depend heavily on the partner. DotOne is configured, implemented and supported by the team that builds it.
Time to value
SAP programmes for mid-size companies commonly run for many months. DotOne starts from industry templates, which usually shortens the path to go-live.
Customisation
SAP processes are usually adapted through configuration and custom development by specialists. In DotOne, sector-specific flows are part of the template, and unique needs are built as modules by the same team.
Cost questions to ask any vendor
- What are the licence or subscription costs for every user type we need, now and in five years?
- What will implementation, data migration, custom development and testing cost?
- What hosting, infrastructure and database costs are included or extra?
- What does annual support and maintenance cost, and who provides it?
- How are upgrades handled for our customisations?
Our ERP pricing guide lists the cost components to compare across vendors over five years.
Migrating from SAP to DotOne
Masters such as materials, customers, vendors, BOMs, routings and chart of accounts, along with open orders and opening balances, can be exported from SAP and mapped into DotOne. Historical data can stay available in reports or an archive for audits.
We plan a cut-off date, a short parallel run and department-wise training. If SAP must stay in use at group level, DotOne can exchange data with it through APIs; see our ERP integration services.
Where DotOne fits
DotOne is built for Indian manufacturers and growing businesses that want an ERP that already understands their industry, implemented and supported by the team that builds it. It covers CRM, sales, purchase, inventory, manufacturing, quality, dispatch, HR and finance, with AI agents and a mobile app.
If you are a large, multi-country enterprise, SAP is a strong choice. If you are a mid-size manufacturer reviewing your SAP roadmap, evaluate DotOne alongside S/4HANA with a scripted demo of your own process.
